CPL Bell was killed Aug. 22, 2007 in Multaka, (northern) Iraq, of injuries suffered when his helicopter crashed.   Rickey, the door gunner, was among 14 who died in the crash. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 6th U.S. Air Cavalry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Wash.

The Pentagon says the Black Hawk helicopter was one of two taking part in a night-time operation. The crash is the worst single-day death toll in Iraq since January 2007 and the worst helicopter crash for Americans in the last two years.

CPL Rickey L. Bell, known as "little Rickey," was always friends with everybody.

CPL Rickey Bell was from Caruthersville, Missouri.  He graduated from Caruthersville High School in 2005 and immediately joined the Army, which sent him to Fort Lewis, where he became part of the Dark Horse Warriors.

"He loved the Army," (his aunt, Glenda) Overbey said. "He loved it. He loved what he was doing. He always volunteered. If there was anything to be volunteered for, Rickey volunteered."

His mother, Janice, works for Missouri's family services agency; his father, Rickey Sr., works in a factory that produces electrical fuses.

Because of his father's name, the family called the younger Bell "Little Rickey," said Overbey, Ricky Sr.'s sister.

"Little Rickey is the way we referred to him," she said. "Little Rickey is the way we'll remember him."

"He used to like to change seats on me a lot, he would always change seats in class," said Cathy Montgomery, Bell's sixth grade teacher.

"We always used to go mudding together on the island and we used to see who could get their truck stuck first and we used to see who had the baddest truck or whatever. We had a lot of memories together; we went riding 4-wheelers.  We did everything together," said Bell's lifelong best friend Thomas Guest.

A 2005 graduate of Caruthersville High School, Bell had just turned 21 years old.

"I think it will bring the people together. It's always bad when a young person loses their life and you never think it will happen here," said Montgomery.

"There's been a lot of people die and now we have somebody from Caruthersville who have died and he's a really good friend to a lot of people here and everybody knows him, so it's really sad," said Guest.

Flags fly at half staff as a community comes together to mourn the loss of CPL Bell.

"It makes me real proud that he was serving his country and doing what he loved to do.  You know it's sad but it makes it a little bit better knowing that he wasn't over there wanting to come home or anything, he was really loving it," said Guest.

Rickey Bell was scheduled to come home from Iraq for furlough on September 15th.

Friends and teachers remember Bell as someone who made people laugh.

"I remember his smiling face everyday. He was always laughing, getting kids in good moods, spirits," said Dona Clark, Bell's former teacher.

Bell was due home on leave next month, his aunt Glenda Overbey told The Associated Press. He graduated high school in his Missouri hometown, population 7,000, in 2005 and went into the Army and arrived at Fort Lewis that December.

Friends and former teachers said he was well-liked.

"I was listening to the news and I heard the tragedy of the helicopter crash and I thought, oh how sad, all those families loosing their loved ones. Not even knowing that it was actually a former student and a friend of the family," said family friend and freshman teacher Dona Clark.

"He knew everybody. He was always friends with everybody. He talked to everybody. He was always a happy person. It’s a sad day," said Thomas Guest, a friend.

In Caruthersville, Mo., it seemed yesterday like the entire town of about 7,000 was waiting for the body of CPL. Rickey Bell.

To bring Bell home — possibly as soon as tomorrow — his aunt, Glenda Overbey, helped the Army find a landing strip at least 3,000 feet long for his plane.

She finally found one — a city-owned airstrip 4,000 feet long.

ricky_bell03.jpg

"I wouldn't exactly call it a municipal airport," Overbey said. "But we have to get Rickey home. It will be a huge turnout. The Bells are from Hayti, Mo., in Pemiscot County and the whole county will be there."

CPL Rickey Bell is survived by his mother, Janice, and his father, Rickey.

EVERYTHING REMAINS EXCATLY AS IT WAS.I AM I, AND YOU ARE YOU, AND THE OLD LIFE WE LIVED SO FONDLY TOGETHER IS UNTOUCHED, UNCHANGED. WHATEVER WE WERE TO EACH OTHER THAT WE ARE STILL. CALL ME BY MY OLD FAMILIAR NAME. SPEAK OF ME IN A WAY WHICH YOU ALWAYS USED.PUT NO DIFFERENCE IN YOUR TONE. WEAR NO FORCED AIR OF SOLEMNITY OF SORROW. LAUGH AS WE ALWAYS LAUGHED AT THE LITTLE JOKES THAT WE ENJOYED TOGETHER.PLAY, SMILE, THINK OF ME, PRAY FOR ME. LET MY NAME BE EVER THE HOUSEHOLD WORD THAT IT ALWAYS WAS.LIFE MEANS ALL THAT IT EVER MEANT.IT IS THE SAME AS IT EVER WAS. WHAT IS THIS DEATH BUT A NEGLIGIBLE ACCIDENT? WHY SHOULD I BE OUT OF MIND BECAUSE I AM OUT OF SIGHT? I AM WAITING FOR YOU, FOR AN INTERVAL, SOMEWHERE VERY NEAR, JUST AROUND THE CORNER. ALL IS WELL. NOTHING IS HURT;;;;NOTHING IS LOST. Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Ricky.

Going home, going home,

I'm just going home.

Quiet-like, slip away-

I'll be going home.

It's not far, just close by;

Jesus is the Door;

Work all done, laid aside,

Fear and grief no more.

Friends are there, waiting now.

He is waiting, too.

See His smile! See His hand!

He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;

Restless dream all done;

Shadows gone, break of day,

Life has just begun.

Every tear wiped away,

Pain and sickness gone;

Wide awake there with Him!

Peace goes on and on!

Going home, going home,

I'll be going home.

See the Light! See the Sun!

I'm just going home.

You stood tall

You did not falter

That battle for right

You are HEROS in his sight

Your honor and pride

Stood tall all the way

And now you have come

To the end of your day

Your watch is over

With all the respect

We stand for so dear

You will ride in our hearts

Down the FLAG filled road

Thank you, BRAVE WARRIOR

You carried our load

Protecting us all

By both day and night

Never once flinching

In the heat of the fight

As we ride for you now

Our hearts filled with sorrow

Never to forget you

For all of the tomorrow’s

When the bugle plays TAPS

And the rifles will sound

Our eyes will be full

Our tears on the ground

You will be missed

By ones never met

You are our HERO

We will never forget

GOD BLESS OUR MIGHTY AND VIGILANT MILITARY. SECOND TO NONE. BECAUSE OF THEM WE ARE STILL FREE.

May God bless this American Hero and keep him by his side. I will do my best to be there to escort and honor this American hero to his final resting place.

To SPC Ricky Bell,

A great man once said, "Poor is the Nation that has no Heroes, Shameful is the one that, having them, Forgets". We will never forget the duty, service, honor, faithfulness and sacrifice you have given to our nation. You are now in the great cloud of witnesses cheering us on. We will not falter, We will not fail, We will not weaken.

To the family of SPC Ricky Bell,

I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. (Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby 21 Nov 1864). We will continually be praying for your family at our church. God is strengthening you.

A Soldier's Prayer

(author unknown)

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.

As i write to tell you how sorry i am of the loss of Ricky, I try to understand why do these young people want to go in to harms way. These young men and women sacrifice themselves for the good of this country. An unselfish and truly brave thing to do. Please know that his actions will forever be remembered by my self and other Americans who enjoy the freedom that he defended. God bless you and keep you.
